History of the Half Dome

Half Dome is made of quartz monzonite, a type of granite, and its summit is 8,842 feet above sea level. It was formed millions of years ago by the slow erosion of glaciers, creating the distinctive shape of the dome.

Native Americans were the first to use the area, giving Half Dome its name. The first documented ascent of Half Dome was by George Anderson in 1875.

In 1919, Half Dome ropes were installed, allowing hikers to climb the steep face of the dome. This led to a large increase in the number of visitors. In recent years, Half Dome's popularity has even led to overcrowding on the summit. To control visitor numbers, the National Park Service instituted a permit system.

Half Dome has become a landmark in Yosemite National Park and will continue to be a popular destination.

How to get to Half Dome

The Mist Trail is the most popular way to get to Half Dome, and at 13 miles round trip, it's also the shortest. The trail starts at the Happy Isles Trailhead in Yosemite Valley and climbs a series of granite steps and switchbacks to the top of the dome.

The John Muir Trail is a 22-mile loop and a more challenging route than the Mist Trail. It begins at the Happy Isles Trailhead and follows the Merced River to the base of Nevada Falls, then continues through Little Yosemite Valley and up the backside of Half Dome.

The Cables Route is the most direct route to the summit of Half Dome and is an 8-mile loop trail. The route starts at the Half Dome Trailhead and follows the Mist Trail for the first two miles, then continues up granite slabs to the Cables.

The Panorama Trail is the longest route to Half Dome at 17 miles round trip but is less steep than the Mist Trail and John Muir Trail. The trail starts at Glacier Point and follows Illilouette Creek to the top of Nevada Falls before climbing back up the backside of Half Dome.
